For anyone having trouble reading the above-

Emerging talent ready to replace old stalwarts
STABLE TOUR PETER BOWEN
Published: 10/11/2008 (Features)
SOMETHING akin to a changing of the guard seems to be under way at Peter Bowen's Yet-y-Rhug yard in Pembrokeshire.
Stable stalwarts such as Ballycassidy, Dunbrody Millar, Take The Stand, and Mr Ed - regular faces in leading chases throughout the season for several years now - are all set to contest hunter chases this winter, leaving the way clear for emerging talents to assume their big-race places.
Bowen and his team maintain the pace the year round, so it's little surprise that they currently occupy fourth in the trainers' championship after enjoying big-race successes during the summer and early autumn.
Snoopy Loopy in particular has already stamped his mark on the season, and will bid to continue his improvement while gunning for several of the big chases this season, along with Yes Sir, who holds an entry for the Paddy Power following his excellent win at Wetherby.
Hot on their heels from are several younger types who could well emulate their elders and help Bowen continue to plunder the big meetings while maintaining his smart strike-rate.
Interview by Amy Bennett
Always Waining
7g Unfuwain - Glenarff
Mrs & Mrs Peter James Douglas 7-1P641
Won a Listed race at Market Rasen in September on his last start, and he improved for the application of a tongue-tie. He's on a mark of 147, so things will probably be a bit harder for him. He has an entry for the Paddy Power and the Hennessy, but the Becher Chase is the race I would like to go for. If he handled that well he would go for the National as he's a good jumper and he stays very well. If he does go for the Becher, he would then have a little break to freshen him up and then perhaps one run before the National.
Amazing Valour
6g Sinndar - Flabbergasted
Gwilym J Morris 419-026
He ran really well at Plumpton in September when he finished second and that form now looks good. He was a little bit disappointing at Stratford last time - he doesn't really seem to go well at Stratford so we won't take him there again. He'll probably go to Fontwell on Sunday for the Southern National over 3m4f, a race he ran well in last year. He wants good ground, ideally, and a trip. I think there's a bit more improvement to come from him.
Amoreigh
11g Un Desperado - Windy Miller
J P Cooke 61213-5
He pulled a muscle in his backend last season and wasn't right for a while but he seems to be back well now. He's had one race this season, after a quite long break, around Ludlow, which is too quick a track for him and the ground was good anyway, which didn't suit him. With a bit of luck he'll go back to a track like Plumpton on softer ground and win again.
Ballycassidy
12g Insan - Bitofabreeze
MBowen 659PPP
Was officially retired and was given to son Mickey last summer, but he's really, really well so we decided to give him a few hunter chases, which will be a massive drop in class for him. Mickey is going to train him, and he'll run in a few hunter chases with the aim of going for the Liverpool Fox Hunters'. Although he's been to Aintree so many times he's never actually got round, but he's jumped really well and he loves the place. He deserves a win there.
Coq Hardi
7g Panoramic - Matagirl
Sir Robert Ogden 7F120-2
He won for us last season at Bangor but probably won it too well as he went up to a mark of 136 over hurdles, which made him very difficult to place. He ran really well over fences at Aintree last time and jumped well. He'll go to Bangor next week for a beginners' chase over 2m4f, which I would hope he'll win. He'll stay novice chasing this season and we'll aim up a bit with him next season. He will be a better chaser than he was a hurdler and there's no reason why he shouldn't pick up a few chases this season.
Don't Be Bleu
6m Pistolet Bleu - Cooleenbridge
Gabriel P O'Gara 1P1185
She came over from Ireland last spring and won three times for us over hurdles. Her mark of 106 over hurdles is quite stiff for her so she'll probably go novice handicap chasing, and we'll try to find good ground for her. She's won a point-to-point in Ireland so fences shouldn't be a problem for her and she's schooled well.
Dont Ask Me
7g Spectrum - Ediyrna
R Scrine 1-10567
He's had three runs in novice chases in which he's been well beaten. He's jumped well, but the handicapper has been pretty harsh on him, giving him a mark of 95 so he's going to have to go handicap chasing.
Dunbrody Millar
10g Lord Americo - Salt Mills
Dundon Else Partnership FP0-77P
Won the Topham last year and a few good chases for us, but he never really returned to form after winning the Topham. I think he went up too high in the handicap and probably became a little bit despondent. He's had a nice summer break and he's due back in this week and he'll go hunter chasing. He'll be aimed at the Liverpool Fox Hunters' too.
Geneva
3g Rainbow Quest - Gracious Line
Mrs Lucinda White
Unraced (ex-Flat)
He was in training with Sir Michael Stoute as a two-year-old and we've had him about six months. He's very well bred but he's had problems with his knees so he never ran at two, but he's been sound with us. He's been schooled over hurdles and he will go hurdling this season, but we'll give him a couple of bumpers first, provided we can find a three-year-old bumper and good ground. He's about two or three weeks off a run now.
Histoire De Moeurs
5m Kaldounevees - Vero De
Moeurs
Patrick Burling Developments Ltd 611268
Has won twice over hurdles and has very good Flat form in France, but I think she would be exposed by the handicapper over hurdles. Her next run will be in a novice chase if we can find a mares' only, and she'd want good ground as well. We've been running her over 2m but she could handle a step up, so I wouldn't mind if we started off over 2m4f.
Iron Man
7g Video Rock - Key Figure
Roddy Owen & Paul Fullagar PU-8033
He's been a good servant to us. He won a couple of good races last year and then lost his way a little bit and went very high in the handicap. He's now definitely on the right mark and he's run two good races on his last runs, giving away two stone to the first and second last time out. He's in very good form and we'll probably try to keep him fresh for the Becher Chase now, or the 2m6f race over the National fences. He's been desperately unlucky every time he's been at Aintree through no fault of his own - he fell in the Becher last year when he looked like he would definitely be in the first three. I might give him a run about ten days before the Becher to put him just right.
Kilcannon Supreme
6g Supreme Leader - Windfields Native
PDQ Racing 721606
Won two bumpers and one over hurdles for us. He's been pretty consistent, but the handicapper may have over-reacted a little bit the day he won. He'll continue to go novice handicap hurdling and hopefully he'll win a couple more before he goes over fences next year.
Lady Roania
8m Saddlers' Hall - Ahead Of My
Time
Mrs Tania Stepney 7424F3
She's won a couple for us over hurdles, and ran quite well last time in a novice handicap chase at Huntingdon. She jumped very well and hopefully she'll win over fences. She's better on a righthanded track and on better ground. I wouldn't mind putting her in mares' novice chases.
Magic Show
4g Marju - White Rabbit
Mr Gwyn Brace and Miss Jane Brace
Ex-Flat
Bought last week at the horses in training sale at Newmarket, having had 12 months off with a touch of a leg. He'd won his last two on the Flat, including one on soft ground, and he's sound now. He's schooled very well and he's a nice big scopey type. He probably won't be ready to run until the new year but he's schooled exceptionally well over hurdles.
He should make into a nice novice hurdler and hopefully a chaser one day.
Markington
5g Medicean - Nemesia
Ron Stepney 000-124
He has run quite well in his last two races after we stepped him up to 3m. I think that's been the making of him as he travels a lot better in his races. He likes a little bit of daylight in his races too, that's very important. He'll stay down the hurdle route this season and the beginning of next season he'll go novice chasing.
Midnight Gold
8g Midnight Legend - Yamrah
Blue Skyes 421/5-60
He came to us out of Alan King's having had 12 months off with quite a bad leg injury and ran quite well on his first run for us.
He disappointed next time, which I would put down to the bounce effect. He's back in good form now and he'll go back to handicap chasing, anything from 2m4f to 3m on goodish ground.
Mizen Raven
5g Sea Raven - Consproblem
Steve & Jackie Fleetham 315126
He's been pretty consistent and won twice over hurdles, which might make him more difficult to place now with a mark of 115. He has had a wind op since his last run, but we'll run him pretty soon and will continue to use the tonguestrap. If he's badly handicapped we would have to go novice chasing. We might just put him in another novice hurdle and put one of the boys on him.
Mumbles Head
7g Flemensfirth - Extra Mile
Ms Jill Daly 2631/12/
He won first time out in a bumper and then he's won three over hurdles, including two in two days at Kelso and Perth. He then met with a leg injury so he's been off since May 2007. He's back now and is ready to run again and he'll probably have one run over hurdles before he goes novice chasing. He's a big horse so he will definitely improve for a fence.
No Panic
5g Dushyantor - Afon Alwen
Liam Mulryan 112733
We've always thought a lot of him and that was a very good run at Chepstow. I didn't think he'd win at Kelso as he'd had a little break and he's only been back in three weeks so he just blew up that day. He's schooled really well over fences but we might keep over hurdles this season as he might be quite good in those long-distance hurdles. He's on quite a high mark so we'll keep him to those good novice hurdles, and he might go for the Challow Hurdle.
Particle
5g Selkrik - Bernique
XRMC Racing 43-7064
He ran really well last time out in a chase at Newcastle. The trip was a little bit too far for him but he jumped particularly well.
He's such a big chasing type that he wants a big galloping track. He'll go back to Newcastle next week in a 3m handicap chase in which he should go pretty close.
Peppertree Lane
5h Peintre Celebre - Salonrolle
Dai Walters
Ex-Flat
We bought him at Newmarket last week for 80,000gns. He was second in a Group 3 last time out in October. He has seriously good Flat form - he's won nine and been placed eight times, and he won a Listed race in June at Goodwood and a Group 3 at the Curragh last year. He jumped for the first time this morning over the poles and he was a complete natural. It won't be long before he's out in a novice hurdle.
Putney Bridge
6g Slip Anchor - Mayroni
Walters Plant Hire Ltd 141-
A recent arrival from Tim Vaughan. He's won two bumpers and I think the form is rock-solid. We'll either try to find a bumper for him and maybe claim off him, or maybe we will run him straight over hurdles. With a bit of luck that Stratford form will hold up. He's more or less ready to run.
Quattrocentro
4g Robin Des Champs - Quadrige Du Marais
Roddy Owen and Paul Fullagar 50-4130
He ran a bit disappointing last time but he's a very big backward four-year-old and he was a little bit weak in the ground. He won his novice hurdle very well and that form looks good. He then went in a very, very hot novice chase and was third, and his run the other day was perhaps a bit too quick. We'll give him six weeks and then probably run him just before Christmas in a novice chase, rather than a handicap, as I think he might find it a bit difficult in a handicap.
Royal Scoundrel
4g Anshan - Bridgequarter Lady
R Owen 1
He's one we're quite excited about.
He's from the family of Royal Athlete and West Tip, and he's a real athlete. He jumps particularly well, and there's no bottom to him. He won his bumper by 14 lengths; admittedly it might not have been the best bumper at that time of year but he couldn't have done it any easier. We then gave him a bit of a holiday but he's more or less ready to run so we'll find a bumper for him on a big galloping track and see how he gets on in better company with a penalty. It may be that we won't run him over hurdles this season as he's only a four-year-old.
Santando
8g Hernando - Santarem
Jonathan Martin 231-069
He had a year off and he probably needed his first few runs back over fences. He's now ready to go again I'd say and we'll stick to 3m handicap chases with the Sussex National as his main aim.
Sir Monty
6g Cat's Career - Lady Of
Meadowlane Saith O Ni & Karen Bowen 80P-975
Looked as if he was going to be a bright prospect when he started off last year but then he disappointed. He ran well in his novice hurdle at Aintree and that form looked very good, but then after that he disappointed. We haven't really been able to put a finger on the reason why but he seemed to be returning to form on his last run at Bangor, so hopefully he will continue the upward trend. He will probably go in a handicap chase at Ludlow on Thursday.
Snoopy Loopy
10g Old Vic - Lovely Snoopy
Walters Plant Hire Egan Waste Ltd 2B1133
He's just been amazing this season.
He started off last season on a mark of 108 over fences and now he's on a mark of 157. He would probably have got closer to them atWetherby if he hadn't run in the Old Roan Chase, it probably came too quick for him. He's entered in the Hennessy and the Betfair Chase at Haydock, but he'd have almost top weight in the Hennessy so he might be better off in the Betfair Chase with not many runners. Even if he's not going to be quite good enough to win those big chases he's going to be a good earner. Handicaps will obviously be hard for him off his mark so we'll keep looking at those big races and hopefully one day one of them will cut up for him and he can just nick one.
We'll also keep trying to pick up points for the Order of Merit, for which he's already earned 20 points.
Souffleur
5g In The Wings - Salinova
Mrs Karen Bowen, W Bryan, Mrs & Mrs J Timmons 131347-
It was a good performance when he won the Challow Hurdle but he then had a virus and was never right for the rest of the season over hurdles. He's run quite well on the Flat. I would say his Newmarket run in the Cesarewitch was a little bit disappointing but the ground was too fast for him. Ideally he needs soft ground. He'll go to Haydock for the £100,000 3m handicap hurdle at the end of the month and hopefully he'll return to the form he was in. If he did become good enough then you'd have to look at the World Hurdle with him.
Taffy Thomas
4g Alflora - Tui
LucyWilliams
Unraced
He's out of a mare that we won six races with on the Flat and over hurdles. He's homebred and he's a big horse, whereas Tui was a tiny little thing. He works well and he'll be ready to run in bumpers in about three weeks' time. We won't be too hard on him as he's only a four-year-old so he'll probably have a couple of bumper runs and then be turned away and go novice hurdling next season.
Take The Stand
12g Witness Box - Denys Daughter
David Robbins & Frank Ridge 11-1284
He had a good season hunter chasing last season, won three and went to Cheltenham. He was narrowly beaten in the Horse and Hound Cup and then went back to handicap chasing and didn't seem to take to it so we'll stick to hunter chases with him.
He loves Cheltenham so much the aim is to go back there for the Foxhunters. Having been second in the Gold Cup he deserves to win there.
Tommy Spar
8g Silver Owl - Lady Of Mine
Ralph Morgans U7F7-PP
Another who has gone very high in the weights. The handicapper was very slow to drop him so he has no other option really than to go hunter chasing. He could have to run for another season to come down to a mark he could win off. He's still on a mark of 130 which is far too high for him.
Tot Of The Knar
6m Kayf Tara - Maggie Marne
Steve & Jackie Fleetham 121623
Has been with us a fortnight and she will probably go to Cheltenham for the handicap hurdle at the Paddy Power meeting. She's schooled over fences and she jumped very well, but this season we will probably continue to go down the handicap route with her, and maybe look at some of the good mares' races with her. Anything from 2m4f to 3m1f would suit her, she stays very well and she's won point-to-points so we know she stays. She'll probably go novice chasing next season.
Valiant Shadow
6g Winged Love - Vangelis
Tristar 27436P
He won a couple over hurdles but he's lost his way a little bit the last few months. He's working well and has schooled well. He's quite high in the handicap over hurdles so he'll really have to go the chasing route.
Yes Sir
9g Needle Gun - Miss Pushover
Ms YMHill & T J Healy7P6321
We were expecting a good run at Wetherby because he had definitely come back to form. He ran well when he was sixth at Market Rasen behind Always Waining and he looked that day as if he was returning to form. Then he went to Wetherby and got beaten and then ran really well in a chase at Cheltenham. He can be quite difficult to train as he has a few problems with his lungs and one thing or another, but he's been a good horse for us. He's obviously gone up in the handicap and he has to run off a mark of 144 in the Paddy Power, but on his last couple of runs you'd have to be hopeful.

I always thought that you paid on the day Rod and then Doncaster would hold onto the money for a month in case any probs were found with him, before passing onto the seller.

If you do go Rod some photos of your new guy would be nice.

There are a few names there Rod that I was going to ask you about in the Members Horses section so I'm glad you've mentioned them altogether. What the news on Mike Towey, Quattro, Royal Scoundrel, and Iron Man. None of them have run for a while and I was expecting to see Quattro (entered for various races but ballotted out) and Mike Towey to run during the Summer. Waiting for better ground or are they on a Summer break?
